Using the Intel® ICH Family Watchdog Timer (WDT) Application Note: AP-725

This document provides details on the Watchdog Timer (WDT) logic in the Intel ICH family of components. The WDT is used to detect system lockups, either due to software or hardware problems, and recover from those lockups. This reduces system downtime and reduces the platform's Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). The WDT is controlled by a combination of BIOS and OS-based software. This document includes descriptions of the specific hardware mechanisms and restrictions, as well as suggested algorithms for software interaction with the hardware. A suggested ACPI Descriptor Table is also included.
