i960 Imaging Applications
The i960® processor 32-bit family has been widely accepted as a cost-effective solution for imaging applications. The architecture was designed for use in a wide range of embedded imaging and communications applications and is well-suited for both X Window terminal and page printer designs. X Window implementations range from low-cost, moderate performance monochrome terminals to high-performance, multi-plane color terminals. In page printer applications, the i960 processors provide attractive price/performance system solutions from low-cost, 300 dpi monochrome to high-performance, multi-bit per pixel color or high-resolution 1200 dpi implementations.
The i960 processor family allows users to implement a range of cost/performance alternatives. The i960 SA and i960 SB processors are ideal for cost-sensitive designs. The i960 KA and i960 KB processors deliver high-performance with inexpensive DRAM memory subsystems. The i960 CA and i960 CF processors are superscaler implementations and are able to execute multiple instructions per clock. The i960 family can deliver this range of price and performance alternatives because it was designed for the extreme flexibility required by the imaging marketplace.
Designers for imaging applications need system solutions that include hardware, software and development tools to accomplish the goal of faster time to market. Therefore, X server, page description languages, real-time operating systems and other system software are ported to the i960 processor and available to customers from multiple vendors. The code compatibility of the i960 processor eliminates incremental software development investment.
