Intel® i960® Jx Processors

What are some comparisons between the 80960Jx processors?
The Intel® i960® JS, JC and JT processors are differentiated by their maximum core clock frequency. All three feature 16K instruction cache and 4K data cache. See JS, JC and JT-100 Processors for price, performance and packaging details.

  • The i960® JS processor is available in 3 speeds: 16MHz, 25MHz and 33 MHz.
  • The i960® JC processor features clock doubling technology. This technology enables the microprocessor to run at speeds up to 66MHz internally while connecting to a lower-cost 33MHz external system. The JC is available in 2 speeds, 25/50 and 33/66.
  • The 100MHz i960® JT processor is clock tripled with a 33MHz external bus.
Complete specifications can be found in the Intel® i960® JA/JF/JD/JS/JC/JT 3.3V processor datasheet.

What kind of design considerations would be necessary when upgrading from the 3.3 V, 5 V Tolerant 80960JA/JF/JD Embedded Processors to the 80960JT Processor?
Please view the Upgrading Designs from the 3.3 V, 5 V Tolerant 80960JA/JF/JD Embedded Processors to the 80960JT Application Note for upgrade considerations.

What is the Mini-PBGA package?
Read the i960 JT processor press release for a detailed overview of the mini-PBGA package.

Chapter 14 of the Intel® Packaging Databook describes the physical characteristics of this package, which is also known as the 15mm 196-ball PBGA package.

Which parts are extended temperature in this family and what is the temperature range of these parts?
The JS25, JS33, JC66 and JT100 will be offered as extended temperature parts. They are available in two package types, the 132lead Plastic Quad Flat Pack (PQFP), and the 15mm 196-ball PBGA (Mini-PBGA) package. The temperature specification is 0 to 100C.

How can I identify the parts numbers for the 3.3v and 5v 80960 JA/JF/JD processors?
The 3.3V versions of the 80960JA/JF/JD processors are identified as follows:
  • i960® JA: 80960JA3V16, 80960JA3V25, 80960JA3V33
  • i960® JF: 80960JA3V16, 80960JF3V25, 80960JF3V33
  • i960® JD: 80960JD3V33, 80960JD3V40, 80960JD3V50,80960JD3V66
The 5V versions of the 80960JA/JF/JD processors, which are no longer available, do not have the "3V" designation before the last two digits of the product code.

The 80960JD3V66, a 66MHz i960 JD processor, was never available in a 5V version.
