If you have a system with an Intel® 82801GHM I/O controller hub (ICH7MDH) in RAID mode, Intel® Matrix Storage Technology software is required. This is because Intel® Matrix Storage Technology software enables both RAID and AHCI support.
If you have a system with an Intel® 82801GBM I/O controller hub (ICH7M) or Intel® 82801FBM I/O controller hub (ICH6M) and the Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) is enabled, Intel® Matrix Storage Technology software is required. This is because Intel® Matrix Storage Technology supports AHCI.
If one or more Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives are being used, using AHCI is recommended. The key benefits of AHCI include lower power consumption and increased system performance via two technologies: Link Power Management (LPM) and Native Command Queuing (NCQ). LPM, when used in conjunction with a SATA hard drive that supports this feature, enables lower power consumption under certain workloads. NCQ, when used in conjunction with a hard drive that supports this feature, can increase storage performance on random workloads.
Note: The latest version of the Intel® Matrix Storage Technology software is named Intel® Matrix Storage Manager.
