EtherExpress™ 16 Adapter
Windows NT* 4.x Installation Notes

Before You Start

Before installing the NDIS driver, be sure to run the EtherExpress™ 16 adapter SOFTSET program (as described in the Installation Guide) to configure the adapter and to verify that the diagnostic test passes.

If you are using multiple EtherExpress™ 16 adapters in the same PC, you need to write down the configuration of each EtherExpress™ 16 adapter. This includes the I/O Port address setting and Interrupt for each EtherExpress 16 adapter.

General Installation

  1. The EtherExpress™ 16 adapter should be configured and tested prior to setting it up in Windows* NT. You can configure the adapter with SOFTSET.EXE. SOFTSET cannot be run under Windows NT, you must boot to DOS.

  2. In Windows NT, double click the My Computer icon.

  3. In My Computer, double click the Control Panel icon

  4. In Control Panel, double click the Network icon.

  5. Select the Adapters tab and click Add.

  6. A list of available adapters will be displayed. Select Intel EtherExpress 16 LAN Adapter

  7. Specify the following settings for EtherExpress 16 adapter:

    IRQ Level:
    I/O Port Address:
    I/O Channel Ready:
    Transceiver Type:

Make sure to set the values to match the actual settings of the EtherExpress 16 adapter as configured with SoftSet or FlashSet. DO NOT change the I/O Channel Ready. The proper setting was already determined. Changing this parameter could cause the adapter to become inoperable.

Note: If you're not sure what the I/O Port address should be, make a selection here and after Windows NT installation is complete, run SOFTSET.EXE from the EtherExpress 16 to make sure that it is correct. For example, if the EtherExpress 16 adapter was set to I/O Address 300h, select 0x300.

  8. From the Network window, select the Identification tab.

  9. Specify a unique Computer Name, then specify the name of the Workgroup or Domain that you belong to. Select Close.

  10. Windows NT will perform the binding process. If any additional network software options were installed, you may be prompted for specific information about settings for those protocols.

  11. When prompted to restart your computer in order for the changes to take effect, select Yes

Troubleshooting Tips

  • At least one device or driver failed during system startup

If Windows* NT fails to detect or initialize the EtherExpress 16 adapter, you will get this error message in the Event Viewer:

" The EtherExpress™ 16 LAN adapter Driver service failed to start do to the following error: A device attached to the system is not functioning"

    Try these steps:

    1. Verify that the I/O address that you specified for the EtherExpress 16 LAN adapter is correct by running SOFTSET.EXE and selecting View Configuration from the menu. If the I/O address is different than the value you specified when installing Windows NT, select the I/O address from menu and change it to match the I/O Port Address settings in Windows NT.

    2. Verify that the I/O address and/or interrupt being used by the EtherExpress 16 adapter are not being used by any other device in your workstation, like a sound card, faxmodem, scanner, tape backup, serial ports, parallel ports, etc.

Look at the documentation or setup programs for the other installed adapters in your computer to verify what I/O address and interrupts they are using. Some sound cards use multiple interrupts and I/O addresses. For example, a typical sound card will use an I/O address of 220 and IRQ 5 for the sound port and an I/O address of 330 and IRQ 11 for the MIDI/Joystick port.

    3. Verify that the EtherExpress 16 adapter passes all diagnostic tests by running SOFTSET.EXE from DOS and selecting "Run Diagnostics". If the EtherExpress 16 adapter fails diagnostics it will not function correctly under Windows NT.

If diagnostics fail, try setting the EtherExpress 16 to a different I/O address or a different interrupt.

  • Adapter passes diagnostics but still does not work with Windows* NT

If the adapter passes diagnostics but still does not work with Windows* NT, there could be a problem with your NT network configuration. If you've made several attempts to configure Windows NT or had another adapter installed before the EtherExpress 16 LAN adapter, it may be necessary to change the Windows NT Network setup to the default settings and reinstall the EtherExpress™ 16 LAN driver. Here's how:

    1. Choose the Network icon in Control Panel, select the Adapters tab.

    2. Highlight the Intel® EtherExpress™ 16 LAN Adapter and click Remove.

    3. From the Network Settings window, click OK.

    4. Windows NT will have to reset for the changes to take effect. When prompted, select Yes.

    5. Reinstall the EtherExpress™ 16 LAN adapter following the General Installation steps above.
