The following systems have been tested by Intel and found to be COMPATIBLE with the HARDWARE of the Intel Faxmodems for PCMCIA. However, these systems' internal PCMCIA controller chips do not support the Intel Card Manager software, and therefore:
- Intel recommends not removing or re-inserting the PCMCIA Faxmodem while the computer is turned on.
- The fax and data communications applications shipped with the Intel Faxmodem Release 2 (Intel FAXability and HyperAccess Lite Release 2) will not work on these systems.
- However, the communications and fax applications shipped with the Intel Faxmodem Release 3, and many others, work as long as the Intel Faxmodem is in the PCMCIA slot at power-up, the system recognizes it, and you don't expect to remove the faxmodem with the power on.

NOTES
[1] For special installation instructions, order document 3434.
[3] The HP 100 is compatible with the following Intel PCMCIA Faxmodems: all Release 3 modems and Release 2 24/96 ONLY. It is NOT compatible with the Intel Cellular Faxmodem or International Faxmodem 14.4 for PCMCIA.
[4] HP 100 and Omnibook computers have a proprietary device driver that you must activate before installing Intel Faxmodems for PCMCIA. Consult your HP documentation for precise instructions. Sager* 486 NP-433: Not Compatible With Card Manager Software
At this time, the Sager*486 NP-433 system's PCMCIA hardware is NOT COMPATIBLE with Intel's Card Manager software. This system uses a Databook controller with Socket Services version 1.40. Intel's Card Manager software requires version 2.01 or higher. Sager* NP-480: Compatible With Card Manager Software
Intel tested the Sager* NP-480 system and found it COMPATIBLE with Intel Card Manager software. However, Sager NP-480 systems ship with PCMCIA software that can't correctly install Intel PCMCIA products. This PCMCIA software can work in conjunction with Intel's Card Manager Software, but Intel doesn't recommend using Sager PCMCIA software unless you have a PC Card that Sager software can install and the Intel Card Manager cannot.
For more information on configuring the existing PCMCIA software to work with the Intel Card Manager software, refer to the SystemSoft information In document #3422, "Cross PC Card Compatibility."
Before Installing Intel'S Release 2 Software:
- Edit your CONFIG.SYS file as a plain text file. In CONFIG.SYS, edit the EMM386.EXE line to read:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM 256 X=DD00-DFFF
- In CONFIG.SYS, insert the word REM before any line device driver for the manufacturer's PCMCIA software.
- Save CONFIG.SYS, exit Windows completely, and reboot.
After Installing Intel'S Release 2 Software:
- The last lines of your CONFIG.SYS file should be:
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\SS365SL.EXE /ADA=0 DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CS.EXE DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\RTINIT.EXE /IO=260-26F DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE
- The following lines have been added to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file: C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE
PATH=C:\FAX;%PATH% C:\FAX\CASMODEM.EXE
Before Installing Intel'S Release 3 Software:
- Edit your CONFIG.SYS file as a plain text file. In CONFIG.SYS, edit the EMM386.EXE line to read:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=DD00-DFFF
- Save CONFIG.SYS, exit Windows completely, and reboot.
- Follow the installation procedure in the Intel Faxmodem Quick Start Guide.
After Installing Intel'S Release 3 Software:
If the manufacturer's PCMCIA software is present, the first line of your CONFIG.SYS file should be:
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CPR.SYS
If the manufacturer's PCMCIA Software is present, the last lines of your CONFIG.SYS file should be:
[other PCMCIA drivers from the laptop manufacturer] DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE INSTALL=C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE /D=0
If the Intel Card Manager Software is the only PCMCIA software present:
The last lines of your CONFIG.SYS file should be:
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CCMSERV.EXE DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\RTINIT.EXE /IO=260-26F DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE /INST INSTALL=C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE /D=0
PCMCIA Faxmodem cards can use these settings:
UPPER MEMORY: C000-DFFF is available to Intel's Card Manager software and EMS providers.
IRQs: 5, 10, 11, or 15 is available to Intel's Card Manager software. IRQ 4 is used by COM1 port and cannot be disabled. IRQ 3 is used by the system's trackball (COM2).
I/O ADDRESSING: 260-26Fh and 300-36Fh. (Available to Intel's Card Manager software.)
Accessing BIOS SETUP: Press [Ctrl], [Alt], and [Esc] at the same time during bootup. Sharp* 6700 Series Systems: Not Compatible With PCMCIA Faxmodem
All systems in the Sharp* 6700 Series are NOT COMPATIBLE with Intel's PCMCIA Faxmodems and Card Manager software, because the I/O controller for the PCMCIA socket and Card Manager software are not compatible.
Sharp Electronics (201) 529-8200 (numbers valid as of 11/1/93). Sharp* 6881: Not Compatible With PCMCIA Faxmodem
This system NOT COMPATIBLE with Intel's PCMCIA Faxmodems and Card Manager software, because the I/O controller for the PCMCIA socket and the Card Manager software are not compatible.
Sharp Electronics (201) 529-8200 (numbers valid as of 10/22/93). Sharp* Expertpad: Probably Incompatible With PCMCIA Faxmodem
The Sharp ExpertPad is PROBABLY INCOMPATIBLE with Intel's PCMCIA Faxmodems and Card Manager software. These systems use a non-Intel processor and a non-DOS operating system. Intel hasn't tested this system.
Sharp Electronics (201) 529-8200 (numbers valid as of 10/22/93). Sharp* Pc 8650: Compatible With Intel® Faxmodem For PCMCIA
Intel® tested the Sharp PC 8650 system and found it COMPATIBLE with the Intel Faxmodem for PCMCIA.
This system uses CARDTALK.SYS to configure PCMCIA cards. CARDTALK.SYS can correctly configure the Intel Faxmodem for PCMCIA. However, neither CARDTALK.SYS nor the system's PCMCIA hardware support Intel's Card Manager Software. If you need assistance in configuring the Intel Faxmodem for PCMCIA on this system, consult the documentation for your system or contact Sharp Technical Support.
This computer comes with COM1 and COM2 ports built in. The optimum configuration for your Intel Faxmodem will be COM3/IRQ5 or COM4/IRQ5.
If the modem is configured to COM4 IRQ5, some Windows applications cannot find the modem. The solution is to reconfigure the modem to COM3 IRQ5. Edit files as follows:
In CONFIG.SYS: DEVICE=C:\CARDUTIL\CARDTALK.SYS /a /serial=3 /com3irq=5
In Windows Control Panel, Ports, for COM 3 Set the Advanced setup for IRQ to 5
In SYSTEM.INI [386Enh] section: Com4IRQ=-1
UPPER MEMORY: The C000-DFFF range is available to PCMCIA device drivers and EMS providers.
Free memory in this system is indicated by 7F instead of FF.
PCMCIA Faxmodem cards can use these settings:
UPPER MEMORY ranges: A block within the range C000-DFFF (This range available to Intel's Card Manager software and EMS providers.)
IRQs: 5, 10, 11, or 12 (Available to PCMCIA cards).
I/O ADDRESSING: 200-23Fh and 300-36Fh.
Accessing BIOS SETUP: Press the [Fn] and [Esc] keys at the same time.
