1. From DOS, copy the Intel utility software
From DOS, create a directory called INTELFXM on your hard drive, then copy all the files from the Intel Faxmodem Utility Program Disk in drive A to the INTELFXM directory.
MKDIR \INTELFXM
CD \INTELFXM
COPY A:*.*
The COMSTAT utility can tell you the current status of your COM ports.
2. Set switches for COM port
The switches are on the metal bracket at the back of the board. COM1, IRQ4 switches and jumpers are in the first illustration below. COM2, IRQ3 switches are immediately below that.
For details on COM ports, see "Options for Choosing a COM Port" below.
CAUTION: Before you touch your faxmodem, ground yourself by touching the metal back of your computer. Electrostatic discharges can damage components in your faxmodem.
3. Insert the board in your computer
Turn off and unplug your computer. Insert the board into an 8-bit slot if one is available. If an 8-bit slot is not available, a 16-bit slot will also work.
Plug in the phone lines and restart your computer
Connect the "LINE" connector on the faxmodem to a wall jack for an analog phone, using the cable provided with the faxmodem. (Most homes have analog phones; most businesses have analog, digital, or both kinds of phones.)
Your faxmodem can share a line with a voice phone, but the faxmodem cannot tell the difference between voice and fax/data on incoming calls. To share a line, plug the phone into the "PHONE" connector on the faxmodem.
Plug in the computer's power cord and turn on the computer.
If your computer locks up after you restart it, you may have conflicts in your system. Turn off the computer power and remove the faxmodem board. Then, read "Options for Choosing a COM Port" at the end of these instructions, or see "Troubleshooting" in your "Intel Faxmodem Owner's Guide."
4. Verify the data modem
Use the TESTCOM program to verify your data modem and phone line. Be sure you're in the INTELFXM directory, then enter:
Follow the screen prompts to:
- Test your COM port
- Run modem diagnostics (once)
- Check phone line for a dial tone
- Exit If TESTCOM uncovers a problem you can't resolve, see "Troubleshooting" in the Intel Faxmodem Owner's Guide.
5. Install software for fax and data communications
To send and receive faxes, or to use the faxmodem for data communications, you need the appropriate software. WinFax LITE (Windows fax software), DosFax LITE (DOS fax software), and COMit LITE (data comm software) are included with your faxmodem.
Run the INSTALL command for your software, using DOS or the Windows Run command.

You can now use your new faxmodem to send or receive a fax, or call up a bulletin board--see your fax or comm software or manuals for details.
Options for choosing a COM port
To see which COM ports and IRQs are available, use the Intel utility COMSTAT. Make sure you're in the INTELFXM directory. Then, at the DOS prompt enter:

If COMSTAT shows COM1 or COM2 with a blank address and blank IRQ, use Option A.
If COMSTAT shows COM1 and COM2 with addresses and IRQs, but either COM1 or COM2 does not have a device plugged into the COM port on the back of the computer, use Option B.
If COMSTAT shows COM1 and COM2 having addresses and IRQs, and both COM ports are being used by other devices, use Option C.
Option A: Assign an unused COM port
If COMSTAT shows COM1 or COM2 with a blank address and blank IRQ, assign the faxmodem to that COM port by setting the faxmodem switches.
Option B: Disable existing COM port and reassign to the faxmodem
In this case you disable a COM port in your computer, then reassign it to your faxmodem.
Use Option B only if:
- The COMSTAT table shows that both COM1 and COM2 already have addresses and IRQs, and,
- Either COM1 or COM2 has no device, like a mouse, connected to its socket at the back of your computer.
Most COM ports can be disabled by running a setup program or by setting switches or jumpers inside the computer. If you need help, check the manual that came with your computer, or ask your manufacturer or dealer.
After disabling the COM port, turn your computer off and on, then rerun COMSTAT. If COMSTAT now shows that the COM port is inactive, continue with Option A. If not, try again to disable the COM port.
Option C: Try COM3 or COM4
If you cannot use COM1 or COM2, consider using COM3 with IRQ5 or COM4 with IRQ2.
- Refer to the COMSTAT table. COM3 or COM4 must have a blank address and IRQ.
- Check the manual for your communications software to see if the software supports COM3 or COM4. (COMit LITE supports COM3 and COM4.)
CAUTION: The following are common conflicts with Option C:
- IRQ5: If you have an IBM XT computer, don't use IRQ5 for your faxmodem because the XT's hard disk controller uses IRQ5. Setting the modem to use IRQ5 in an XT computer can cause major problems, such as destroying the data on your hard disk. Also, many LAN adapter cards use IRQ5. See the manual(s) supplied with your adapter card for more information.
- COM4: If your computer's video board emulates the IBM 8514A standard or uses the S3 chip set, don't use COM4.
If you can't use COM3-IRQ5 or COM4-IRQ2, try COM3 with IRQ4 or COM4 with IRQ3. In this case you will be assigning an IRQ that is already assigned to COM1 or COM2. See "Adding extra COM ports" in Appendix A of the "Intel Faxmodem Owner's Guide."
The order of the switch and jumper illustration shows in this descending order: COM3, IRQ5; COM4, IRQ2; COM3, IRQ4; and COM4, IRQ.
