The key features of the HP/PCL emulation in Faxpop are:

• HP* LaserJet Series III (PCL5) emulation exclusive of HP-GL features, print image modeling, and PCL macros.
  
  
• Support for all fonts and typefaces standard in the HP* Laserjet III.
  
  
• Support for all fonts in HP* cartridges A thru Z except bar code fonts.
  
  
• Support for optional LaserJet* III scalable typefaces from Agfa *. To use these, the user must run the scalable font installation program. This program modifies the emulator's configuration files (IF.FNT, IF.DSC) to support the scalable typefaces.
  
  
• Intel's PCX merge feature which allows a graphic image (e.g., a signature) to be merged with a document.

Faxpop's HP/PCL emulation does not support the following:

• HP-GL functions of the Laserjet III.
  
  
• Scalable typefaces which are downloaded into printer memory.
  
  
• Print Image Modeling.
  
  
• PCL macros.

Agfa notes:
Users who purchase the Agfa/HP Type Director (scalable typefaces on diskette) and also use a LaserJet printer will have to install the scalable typefaces twice -- once for their printer and once for their fax board.

If a user has installed scalable typefaces, and then re-installs the fax software, the typefaces will need to be installed again because installing the fax software creates new emulator configuration files (IF.FNT, IF.DSC).

The largest character size supported by the emulator when running FAXPOP is about 360 points if the emulator is able to allocate at least 64K bytes of EMS, XMS HMA, or XMS UMB memory when it runs. If this extra memory is not available, the maximum character size is about 240 points.

The maximum character size with the stand-alone command line utility PRN2FAX is dependent on available conventional memory, but in most cases will reach 400 points if there is enough memory available for the largest character buffer size supported by the emulator. This point size is dependent on the selected typeface.

Scalable Typefaces:

Almost all supported fonts are generated using the scalable typeface files supplied with the emulator. Scalable typefaces provided are:

These scalable typefaces are available in all of the symbol sets listed later for the bitmap fonts supplied with the LaserJet III printer, as well as in the following symbol sets:

VN Math (6M), VN Intl (13J), VN US (14J), PS Math (5M), PS Text (10J), Math-8 (8M), Pi Font (15U), MS Publ (6J), Windows (9U), DeskTop (7J)

Bitmapped Fonts:

Some of the supported fonts can't be approximated from these scalable typefaces, and are supplied as bitmap soft font files.

The above bitmapped fonts are available in the symbol set indicated for each font.

The following fonts are supplied as bitmapped fonts in the LaserJet II and III printers. In the emulator, they are generated from scalable typefaces, and are available in both portrait and landscape orientation:

The emulator supports these symbol sets as well as the symbol sets listed earlier for scalable typefaces.

FAXPOP supports all fonts found in the Hewlett Packard's A through Z font cartridges except for the bar code fonts in the W and X cartridges.

NOTE: The Roman8 symbol set is a combination of ASCII and Roman extension characters.

A number of fonts are repeated, i.e., they are contained in more than one cartridge. In most cases, the repeated fonts are identical. The list in this section gives those repeated fonts that are not identical in all of the cartridges that they are contained in. In all cases, the font is a portrait-oriented proportional font. The differences are in character spacing, and the Faxpop's HP emulator generates the fonts as they appear in the Z cartridge.
