Installing Winfax Pro 4.0 For Intel® Pcmcia Faxmodems

For the Release 3 14.4 Card (MBFM6831), select the Intel Faxmodem for PCMCIA 14.4/14.4 MBFM6831. Change the Initialization string (Alt-I) to ATZ\. This allows the modem to send and receive faxes at any supported speed.

For the Release 2 14.4 card (MBFM6830), select Generic Class 1 Faxmodem (Software Flow Control) and leave the initialization string as the default (AT&F&C1&D2S7=55\) Click on the default button if you are in doubt. You can then send faxes at any speed supported by the receiving unit, but you can only receive faxes at 4800.

For the Intel Cellular Faxmodem, select Generic Class 1 Faxmodem (Software Flow Control) and change the default initialization string to ATZ&C1&D2S7=55\. This allows you to send at any speed over land line, and normally at 9600 over cellular. Cellular receives come in at 4800 and 2400. Remember, only the Intel Cellular Faxmodem lets you have additional AT commands after the Z command on the init string. Also remember that we autodetect the cable (landline vs cell) and load the appropriate AT&Fx string, so do not use AT&F on a cellular card.

Installing Winfax Pro 3.0

If you were running WinFax PRO 2.0 and want to retain and reuse your WinFax PRO 2.0 logs, follow the directions in the WinFax Pro 3.0 manual that describe "Saving WinFax PRO 2.0 Logs and Events".

To install WinFax PRO 3.0, follow the directions in the WinFax PRO 3.0 manual. The information below will help you answer some of the questions asked by the WinFax PRO 3.0 SETUP about your faxmodem.

SatisFAXtion Classic, upgraded SatisFAXtion Classic and SatisFAXtion Modem/350: These are CAS faxmodems. When WinFax PRO 3.0 SETUP asks you to "Select the fax/modem you have installed," select "CAS" as the Modem type and your faxmodem's name as the Description. Answer all other questions according to your preferences.

Intel Faxmodems for PCMCIA: SatisFAXtion Modem/100, Modem/300:

Note:
Before installing WinFax Pro 3.0, make sure the CASMODEM.EXE program is not running. If you have a CASMODEM.EXE command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, add the statement "REM " to the beginning of the CASMODEM command line, save the file, then reboot your computer.

These are Class 1 faxmodems. When WinFax PRO 3.0 SETUP asks you to "Select the fax/modem you have installed," select "Class 1" as the Modem type and your faxmodem's name as the Description.

If WinFax Pro 3.0 SETUP asks if it's OK to change the COMM.DRV= statement in your SYSTEM.INI file, allow it to do so. WinFax Pro 3.0 requires one of these communications drivers:

  • COMM.DRV (the standard Windows serial communications driver)

  • TURBOCOM.DRV

  • WFXCOMM.DRV (Delrina's new communications driver)

Note:
The WFXCOMM.DRV file reportedly allows you to fax at 14.4Kbps inside Windows. To receive the new file, download WFXCOM.ZIP from the Delrina BBS or call Delrina Customer support.

Answer all other questions according to your preferences.

Using Class 1 and Class 2 Faxmodems Outside of Windows:

Note:
This information is for Class 1 and Class 2 faxmodems only. CAS faxmodems have their own CAS manager that allows them to receive faxes whether you're in Windows or DOS.

If you don't always work in Windows, you can still setup WinFax Pro 3.0 to receive faxes on your Class 1 faxmodem. WinFax Pro 3.0 includes a TSR program that operates while you're in DOS on any program running in DOS.

Change to the directory where you installed WinFax Pro 3.0 then type:

WFXTSR -w<path>

Replace <path> with the path to the WinFax Pro 3.0 directory.

To unload the TSR program, change to the WinFax Pro 3.0 directory then type:

WFXTSR -u

Installing Winfax Pro 2.0

SatisFAXtion Classic, upgraded SatisFAXtion Classic and SatisFAXtion Modem/350:

Note:
WinFax Pro 2.0 can send and receive faxes through SatisFAXtion board running CASMGR 2.01. Earlier versions of CASMGR sometimes locked up when viewing a failed receive event, but CASMGR 2.01 and later do not have that problem.

Note:
If you use CASMGR 1.40 (or higher) with your SatisFAXtion faxmodem, you'll need a program from Delrina to prevent WinFax Pro 2.0 from locking up when you you attempt to view a failed receive fax event. You will find CAS.EXE on Delrina's CompuServe Forum [GO WINAPB] or on the Delrina BBS (416-441-2752). The archive file contains a program named a

README file and the program CASFIX.EXE. The README file instructs you to add the CASFIX command immediately following the CASMGR command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Phone number & file name valid as of 10/26/93.

When DOS receives a file I/O command that includes a file "handle", it uses the Program Segment Prefix (PSP) belonging to the calling program to locate the requested file. Each program has its own PSP, and while each file handle must be unique within a given PSP, different PSPs contain identical file handles (which point to different files). The file handle is simply a pointer into the PSP which in turn references the DOS file system table.

Under DOS there's only one program running, thus only one PSP. Under Windows, you can run multiple programs, each with its own PSP. When you switch between programs in Windows, DOS has no way of knowing until Windows tells DOS which program is currently running. If a program bypasses Windows and does file I/O directly, DOS may use the wrong PSP and access the wrong file (if the PSP contains the file handle).

CASFIX.EXE is a TSR that make sure DOS knows which program is running before allowing direct file I/O.

There is no CASMGR version 1.44, CASMGR from SpectraFax doesn't work with Intel boards.

Install Winfax Pro and select Intel SatisFAXtion as the faxmodem type.

SatisFAXtion Modem/100, Modem/300:

Note:
To use the SatisFAXtion Modem/100, Modem/300 as a Class 1 faxmodem with Winfax Pro 2.0, you need an updated file called MOD1.ZIP available on CompuServe in the Delrina Forum (GO WINAPB). Call WinFax Support in the USA at 407-333-2574(number & file name valid as of 10/26/93) for more information. If you are running WinFax Pro 3.0 you will not need this file.

  1. Install Winfax Pro and select Generic Class 1 as the faxmodem type.

  2. Obtain and install the updated software in the MOD1.ZIP file if you are using WinFax Pro 2.0

Winfax Pro 3.0, 2.0 Not Card Manager-Aware

WinFax Pro 3.0 and WinFax Pro 2.0 are not designed to work with the features of Intel's Card Manager Software that let you remove and insert the Intel Faxmodem for PCMCIA while the application is active. To run the Intel Faxmodem for PCMCIA with either version of WinFax Pro, insert the faxmodem before starting the program and do not remove it while the program is active.

Winfax Pro 3.0 Cas Error 647

Winfax Pro 3.0 is known to report CAS error 647 if you install WinFax

Pro on one drive when the SatisFAXtion is installed on another.

Winfax Pro 3.0 Cas Error 781

WinFax Pro 3.0 is known to return CAS error 781 when you attempt to send a half-page cover page using a CAS faxmodem (such as the Classic, upgraded SatisFAXtion Classic and SatisFAXtion Modem/350). This error does not occur when using a Class 1 faxmodem.

FILE TRANSFERS & WINFAX PRO 3.0

If you receive a file transfer while running WinFax Pro 3.0, the event will terminate after about 30 seconds. WinFax will retain no record of the event.

Apparently, WinFax Pro 3.0 will accept fax events but not file transfer events.

Winfax Pro And Satisfaxtion Faxmodems

The SatisFAXtion Classic, upgraded SatisFAXtion Classic and SatisFAXtion Modem/350 faxmodems operate as CAS faxmodems.

The SatisFAXtion Modem/100, Modem/300 operate as Class 1 faxmodems.

Note:
While it is possible to operate the Modem/100, Modem/300 as CAS faxmodems, Intel recommends operating them as Class 1 faxmodems with Winfax Pro 2.0.

Before installing WinFax PRO, make sure your SatisFAXtion faxmodem is working correctly. Try sending (and/or receiving) a fax using the SatisFAXtion software under DOS. Once you know the SatisFAXtion faxmodem is working, go ahead and install WinFax PRO.
