Disk Space, Defragmentation and Disk Checking

Disk Space
Many games have their own temporary files and therefore require available hard disk space to run properly. Check the game documentation for any free disk space requirements.

Another disk space consideration is the page file. As more system memory gets used, the page file will increase in size. Insufficient disk space for the page file can cause your system to "thrash," where the hard drive is continuously accessed to transfer information back and forth between the hard drive and main system memory. Thrashing seriously impacts performance.

Disk Defragmentation
Frequent use of the hard drive can cause files to become physically separated or split into multiple sections on the hard drive. Disk defragmentation not only puts them back together, but optimizes your hard disk for programs that you frequently run.

Disk Checking
To perform basic file system testing, Scandisk*, CHKDSK, or a third-party application should be used. These utilities will check for simple errors in the file system, such as cross-linked files and invalid entries.
