Express Installer* Fails with Windows* XP Service Pack 2

Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Microsoft* Windows* XP causes failures with the Intel® Express Installer CD for Intel® Desktop Boards. Two known scenarios are detailed below along with the identified workarounds. 

1)  Express Installer Fails to Start

The Express Installer CD fails to start with the error "Internal Error - Process Timed Out."

This scenario may occur when attempting to use the Express Installer CD for the first time after installing Windows XP SP2.  Systems that have had the Express Installer CD loaded prior to SP2 installation will not experience this issue.

This scenario may occur with the Express Installer CD for Intel® Desktop Boards based on the Intel® 845, 848, 865, 875 chipset families.  It may also occur on some versions of the Express Installer CD for Intel Desktop Boards based on the Intel® 915 and 925X Express chipset families.

Workaround #1

  1. Click Start > Control Panel > Internet Options.
  2. Go to the Advanced tab.
  3. Enable Allow active content to run in files on My Computer" in the Security section.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Run Express Installer.

You can disable this setting after running Express Installer.

Workaround #2

  1. Install Windows XP Home or Professional.
  2. Insert the Express Installer CD in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
  3. After Express Installer interface appears, close the application.
  4. Install SP2 for Windows XP.
  5. Re-insert the Express Installer CD in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.  Express Installer will now run as intended.

Workaround #3
After installing Windows XP and SP2, manually install each driver or application from the Express Install CD using 'My Computer' within Windows and navigating to the driver or software application setup files.  Drivers should be installed in the order listed below.

  • Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility
  • Microsoft DirectX 9
  • Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 900, Intel® Extreme Graphics, or Intel® Extreme Graphics 2 (This step is optional and only applies to boards with integrated graphics)
  • Network driver
  • Audio driver
  • Any additional drivers

2)  Microsoft* DirectX* 9 and Some Software Applications Fail to Install

The Microsoft* DirectX* 9 installation from the Express Installer CD appears to fail on systems that have Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed. 

Express Installer checks for a successful DirectX installation on the system.  Attempts to install DirectX 9 by Express Installer result in a FALSE failure since a later version of DirectX 9 is already installed on the system.

Disregard the installation error in Express Installer.  DirectX 9 is included with Windows XP SP2.

This failure may only occur with some versions of the Express Installer CD for Intel Desktop Boards based on the Intel® 915 and 925X Express chipset families.

Intel® Desktop Utilities and the InterVideo* software applications may also fail to install due to their dependence on a successful DirectX 9 installation within Express Installer.

Workarounds:

Intel Desktop Utilities
Manually install the application by navigating to D:\software\applications\sw_applications\Intel_R__Desktop_Utilities_with_Intel_R__Active_Monitor_ \Intel_R_Desktop_Utilities_2.0.8.43 and double clicking on the Setup.exe file.

InterVideo* WinDVD Creator Silver
Manually install the application by navigating to D:\software\applications\sw_applications\Intervideo__WInDVD_Silver\WinDVD_Creater_Silver_2.0.14.317 and double clicking on the Setup.exe file.

InterVideo* Home Theater Silver
This application must be installed by Express Installer prior to the installation of Windows XP SP2.
