Intel® MB440LX Server Platform
Setting Up RPX Module, AMI RAID and Windows NT*

Before You Begin
Several files may be required on floppy disks to complete the setup process. You should prepare:

  • A DOS-bootable floppy with the program and associated files from the AMI Mega RAID Configuration CD-ROM. This floppy will only be needed if you cannot boot from your CD-ROM.
Note: If you use this floppy, DRAMFL.IMG must be in the same directory as RPFLASH.EXE. This small executive runs on the RPX module's Intel® i960® Processor and transfers data between the host memory and the module's Flash memory
  • A floppy with the current RPX module image file. See note below about using images from the CD-ROM. The latest image file is available from the Intel® MB440LX Server Platform  software and drivers page
  • A floppy with the AMI RAID driver copied from the RPX CD-ROM or downloaded from the MB440LX software and drivers page.

Change Configuration Settings in BIOS Setup
In the BIOS Setup Utility, change the following options:

  • Advanced Menu \ Use Multiprocessor Specification from 1.1 to 1.4 (for dual processors only)
  • Advanced Menu \ I/O Processors \ Enable
  • Boot \ Boot device priority \ CD-ROM before Hard Drive
  • Press [F10] to Save & Exit

Configure the RPX Module
  • Make sure the battery pack is connected to the module
  • Make sure memory is installed on the RPX module
  • Install RPX module in your system
Boot your system from...
AMI Mega RAID Configuration CD-ROM Make sure no memory managers are loaded during bootup

Select 'Flash Firmware into NVRAM' from the main menu

or
Startup files copied to a bootable DOS diskette Make sure no memory managers are loaded during bootup

From the command line, run RPFLASH.EXE (RPFLASH launches automatically if you include AUTOEXEC.BAT on the floppy)

Select 'Update Flash memory area from a file'.

Insert the floppy disk with the Image file and select it. The RPX flash will typically be updated in about three minutes.

Notes:

  • The firmware images are about 1 MB and will not fit on a floppy along with the program and associated files.
  • Do not use the image file from CD-ROM # 685994-001 or older
  • The latest image file can be downloaded from the MB440LX software and drivers page

Exit from the update utility and reboot

Configure and Initialize the Drive Array
When prompted, press [Ctrl][M] to enter the AMI Mega RAID configuration utility.

  • Main Menu \Objects \Battery Backup

    Select 'No. of cycles'
    Press [Enter]
    Reset the cycles

  • Main Menu \Configure \Easy Configuration

    This scans for all drives
Select [Space] to make the drives online
Press [Enter] to accept the RAID Configuration and save
Press [Esc] to get back to main menu

  • Main Menu \Initialize

Press [Space] to select the logical drive or drives
    Press [F10] to initialize

Press [Esc] until you have exited the Configuration utility and reboot the system

Install Microsoft Windows* NT* 4.0
Boot from the Windows NT 4.0 Setup Floppy Disks. (This step requires using the original Windows NT Setup floppy disks. Do not boot from the Windows NT CD-ROM, otherwise the hard drives will not be found.)

Setup inspects your hardware and should find a single Intel® Pentium® II Processor during installation. The system also will recognize:

IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2)/PCI IDE Controller
Symbios logic C810 PCI SCSI host adapter

Select [Specify] for loading additional mass storage devices and load the AMI RAID driver from floppy. Windows NT should identify the file as the "Mega RAID Windows NT 960RX Driver ".

Setup then continues with your Windows NT installation

Install AMI Mega RAID Power Console Software for Windows NT*
Load the RPX CD-ROM and select AMI drivers for Windows NT, or run SETUP.EXE from the driver diskette.

The setup program will install the AMI Mega RAID Power Console software.
