Intel® N440BX Server Board
Last Known Issues

Latest BIOS and Drivers
The current Intel® N440BX Server Board production BIOS is NIGHTS0.86B.0095.P14 (version 14). Before updating to this BIOS, the server board firmware must be updated to at least 57BMC730.EXE.

The latest driver versions for the N440BX include support for the Cirrus Logic* GD5480 graphics controller, Intel® EtherExpress™ Pro 100+ LAN adapter, and the Symbios Logic* dual channel Ultra SCSI controller. No additional drivers are required for Windows* 2000.

Note: The SISL feature, Zero Channel RAID, may cause Windows* 2000 setup issues. See the Microsoft* support website for further information regarding SISL information.

Integrating a N440BX DP Server into an Intel® Astor II Chassis
Step by step guide

Integrator Support
Integrator Shortcuts is an easy-to-use checklist of links to ensure integrators have all of the technical documentation they need to build systems based on the N440BX board.

Supported and Non-supported Processors
All N440BX server boards support Intel® Pentium® II processors and some versions also support the Intel® Pentium® III processor. See the special notes on processors supported. Click here for a list of newly-released processors that are not supported.

Single vs. Dual Processor Configurations
The N440BX server board supports configurations of one or two Intel® Pentium® II processors. The board is equipped with an on-board voltage regulation module for each processor, eliminating the need to manually add hardware when going from single- to dual-processor installation.

When only one processor is used, a termination card (included with the board) must be installed into the secondary Slot 1 connector. In dual processor configurations, the speed, voltage and stepping of the two processors must match.

Heatsink Supports
The retention mechanism that comes with the Intel Server Board N440BX is designed to provide the necessary support for the processor(s). The supports that ship with boxed Pentium II processors are not needed with the N440BX.

Emergency Management Port
The built-in Emergency Management Port (EMP) provides remote emergency access and control of server resources. EMP offers Operating System-independent, fundamental remote management access regardless of the server's current state or network availability. The EMP Console software

Adding Dial-Out Paging Capability
The Dial-Out utility provides an "out-of-band " alerting mechanism that allows the server to send a page to an individual if the server is rebooted. This archive includes a document describing the requirements, preparation, and installation of the Dial-Out utility on the server board.

Installing Zero-channel RAID
A "zero-channel" RAID adapter is a PCI RAID controller that uses the on-board SCSI channels to implement a cost-effective hardware RAID solution. Installation help for AMI or Mylex controllers is available in the zero-channel RAID overview.

System Memory
Four dual in-line memory module (DIMM) sockets support up to 512 MB of unbuffered 100 MHz SDRAM or 1 GB of registered 100 MHz SDRAM. See the tested memory list for additional information and memory vendors. Intel strongly recommends the use of ECC memory in the server environment.

Server Board Fails to Boot
Here are some things to check if your N440BX server board fails to boot:

  • If using only one processor, the termination card must be installed.
  • Ensure you are using memory from the tested memory list.
  • Ensure the processor is firmly seated into the Slot 1 Connector.
  • Make sure your power supply provides 0.8A of +5v standby current. If it does not, disable Wake On LAN* via the jumper on the board.

Jumper Settings
The default jumper settings are correct for most installations. The chassis intrusion detection jumper should be moved to "disable" if the N440BX server board will be used in a chassis that does not support a chassis intrusion sensor. The Wake On LAN* "enable" jumper must be disabled if the feature is not desired or if your power supply is incapable of providing 800mA of +5V standby current.

ATX Tower Cases
The N440BX can be integrated with a number of ATX chassis designed for dual processing. A thorough evaluation of mechanical, electrical, thermal, shock, vibration, and EMI needs to be performed by the system manufacturer on the selected ATX tower chassis. The system manufacturer is responsible for ensuring adequate airflow and cooling requirements for the processor.

Intel offers the Intel® Astor and Intel® Columbus II Chassis subassembly kits for the N440BX server board.

Add-in Graphics Cards
Add-in graphics cards are automatically detected. If a PCI graphics adapter is inserted into one of the PCI slots, the add-in adapter will provide the graphics functionality and the on-board adapter will be disabled because it is not a bus mastering device.
