Intel® N440BX Server Board
Connecting SCSI Peripherals

SCSI Termination

The Intel® N440BX Server Board has active termination set at the on-board Symbios SCSI host adapter which requires no user intervention. If the integrator is attaching SCSI devices to the on-board SCSI host adapter, the system integrator must remember to follow standard SCSI configuration practices and terminate the last device on the SCSI bus.

External vs. Internal Devices

The SCSI host adapter on the N440BX server board is actively terminated.

To connect an external SCSI peripheral to the N440BX server board, the last device on the SCSI bus must also be terminated. There are a few ways to accomplish this:

  1. Install a SCSI termination card in an unused I/O slot of the chassis. From the termination card, use an external SCSI cable to connect external SCSI devices.
  2. This method involves the secondary SCSI (narrow) channel, from which a SCSI cable is "taken outside" through an unused I/O slot of the chassis.
  3. Another option is to use an additional SCSI host adapter PCI add-in card. If this option is chosen, Intel does not recommend installing a host adapter in PCI Slot 3, as the onboard Symbios SCSI controller shares the interrupt with PCI Slot Three.

For additional information about the on-board SCSI controller, see the Symbios Logic SDMS User's Guide.
