Latest BIOS and Drivers
The current Intel® R440LX Server Board BIOS is REDWD0.86B.0036.P04 (BIOS 4).
The latest driver versions for the Intel® R440LX Server Board include support for the Cirrus* Logic 5446 graphics, Intel® EtherExpress™ Pro 100B LAN adapter, and the Adaptec* AIC-7880 SCSI controller.
Integrator Support
Integrator Shortcuts is an easy-to-use checklist of links to ensure integrators have all of the technical documentation they need to build systems based on the R440LX server board.
Server Board Fails to Boot or Gets No Video
There are a number of places to check if your R440LX server board fails to boot.
Microprocessors Supported
For server operating systems and applications, Intel strongly recommends using Intel® Pentium® II processors that have ECC built into the L2 cache. However, an R440LX server board does not require Intel® Pentium® II processors with ECC on the L2 cache.
The board supports processors running at 233 MHz, 266 MHz, 300 MHz or 333 MHz
with 512 KB of integrated L2 cache. The 333 MHz Pentium II processor must be used with BIOS 2.1 or higher. Before installing a new processor, see the considerations when installing a Pentium II processor.
Upgrading From Single to Dual Processors
Intel strongly recommends using identical processors whenever possible for dual processing. In the event that identical stepping processors cannot be used, see the "supported
processor combinations " matrix in the Specification Update. This matrix outlines which steppings have been tested together and any known errata.
Processor Settings
The R440LX is factory-set for a default processor speed of 266 MHz. This setting should always be changed when using a processor speed other than 266 MHz. To change the setting, move the jumper labeled CLK EN to position 2-3 and enter the BIOS setup utility at bootup. Change the processor speed on the initial screen and exit the setup utility. Make sure to save the settings when prompted.
Power Supply Recommendations
Intel recommends at least a 275W power supply be used when integrating the R440LX serverboard. Exact power budgeting requirements can be found in the Technical Product Specification.
System Memory
The R440LX server board's four DIMM sockets support up to 512 MB of SDRAM. See the system memory document and tested memory list for details.
LANDesk* Server Manager
See the LANDesk* Server Manager support site for information specific to Intel-manufactured server products. Included is the version of LANDesk* Server Manager supported and the current Maintenance Release for that version.
ATX Tower Cases
Although the form factor of the R440LX server board is an extended ATX (12" x 13"), it can be integrated into a number of standard ATX cases. Some of these cases have been tested by Intel. The integrator or system manufacturer will still need to ensure the chassis meets airflow, thermal and other considerations.
Server Management Firmware
Details about the server management firmware on the R440LX board can be found in the Technical Product Specification.
Jumper Settings
The default jumper settings are correct for most installations. Additional information is available on adjusting these jumper settings to match your processor speed and chassis type.
SCSI Support
The R440LX supports only Ultra-Wide SCSI and the motherboard's SCSI host adapter is actively terminated. System integrators can install internal or external SCSI devices, but not both. To install external SCSI devices, a SCSI termination card must be installed in one of the unused slots.
Add-in Graphics Cards
Add-in graphics cards are automatically detected. The BIOS first searches the ISA bus, then the PCI bus. If no video adapter is found on either bus, the on-board solution is used. If an add-in card is detected, the on-board graphics will not be enabled.
