Symptom(s):
Some Serial ATA (SATA) drives can appear to be non-functioning, i.e., drives do not spin up if jumpers PM2 (Power Management) and SSC (Spread Spectrum Clocking) are enabled.
SATA hard drives do not appear in available drive list or cannot be marked online.
Cause:
PM2 allows the drives to start up in a sleep state and they need a special signal to actually spin.
SSC alters signaling frequency between the drive and controller to reduce EMI.
If these settings are enabled and the drives do not spin up, the hard drives cannot be marked on-line or available. They may appear in a list of hard drives in the controller BIOS but cannot be used by the controller.
Early versions of Intel® RAID controller firmware did not support Power Management and Spread Spectrum Clocking.
Solution:
There are two possible solutions for this issue.
- Disable PM2 and SSC features on the SATA hard drive. Some drive manufacturers have drive jumpers to enable/disable these settings. Some drive manufacturers utilize a software utility to enable/disable one or both of these settings.
Please refer to the hard drive manufacturer's documentation for details on disabling these features on your SATA hard drives.
- Update your RAID controller to the latest revisions of firmware. Intel® RAID controller firmware can be found from the specific controller home page and selecting Software & Downloads.
