The latest BIOS release R0079, for the Multi-Core Intel® Xeon® Processor based server boards, incorporates an enhancement to the BIOS password feature.
The BIOS password is now case sensitive. This capability was not previously available in the BIOS for these server boards, and any characters entered as uppercase were saved by the BIOS as lowercase. Since the BIOS did not distinguish between upper or lower case characters, either would have been accepted by the system, prior to BIOS 79.
With BIOS 79 or later versions, upper and lower case characters are now differentiated by the BIOS. Users who previously thought they were entering uppercase characters may encounter an error after updating to BIOS 79 or later. Users will need to enter their password all in lower case, unless they enter BIOS setup and change their password to use both upper and lower case characters.
In the event that the BIOS password is lost, please refer to the appropriate product user guide for the server product for instructions on clearing the BIOS password.
Note: Characters other than alpha or numeric characters continue to be invalid for BIOS passwords.
