What are SCSI disconnect errors?

Symptom(s):

Problems with disconnects happen per device, such as in the case when a device shows a Last Status code of 0x0000010F. A device in this situation is detrimental to the speed of the SCSI bus, but not to the array or data itself. The Last Status code will remain as long as the device exceeds the disconnect timeout parameters. 

Cause:

This error code indicates that the controller attempted to do a normal disconnect operation with the device, but was unable to do so for a timeout period of 30 seconds. Disconnect is a SCSI procedure in which a device logically stops communicating with the adapter during certain operations and then reestablishes communication with the adapter when the operation is complete. By releasing the SCSI bus, it becomes free for other devices to transfer or receive data.

Solution:

If a device is reporting a disconnect error, there are two options for resolution. The first is to troubleshoot this problem device and replace. This is by far the better approach. The second is to disable SCSI disconnects on that device. This will resolve the Last Status error, but the SCSI bus will remain in the degraded (slower) state.

ENABLING/DISABLING

  1. Start the StorCon RAID configuration utility. 
  2. Navigate to the "Advanced menu" and select "Configure Physical Devices."
  3. Highlight the device in error and press <Enter>.
  4. From the menu select "SCSI Parameters / Initialize."
  5. Highlight "Disconnect" and set that to "Disable." 
  6. Press <Esc> to begin initialization. 

Note: For all zero-channel RAID controllers remember, this parameter must be set, if possible, in the configuration of the onboard SCSI controller.
