Serial ATA and Serial ATA RAID Enable Utility is Required

The ATARAID.EXE file is a utility used to enable Serial ATA operation.

Note: Please use caution when using this utility. It should only be used before the operating system is loaded. Once the operating system is loaded, DO NOT switch to SATA modes. This may result in a non-functioning system.

Instructions contained in this document include:

  • Standard Serial ATA Mode (non-RAID)
  • Serial ATA RAID Mode (Either Striped or Mirrored Set)
  • Checking Serial ATA mode
  • ATARAID.EXE Program Options
Standard Serial ATA Mode (non-RAID):
  1. Prepare a blank formatted floppy diskette
  2. Download ATARAID.EXE file
  3. Run the ATARAID_Comp.EXE (This operation will extract all files onto the floppy diskette, and make the diskette bootable)
  4. Remove all add-in adapters from the system (Includes any add-in PCI cards)
  5. Enter BIOS Setup program by pressing <F2> during POST
  6. Select the >> Advanced >> OnBoard Devices menu
  7. Confirm the following OnBoard Devices are enabled
    OnBoard Serial ATA:     [Enabled]
    OnBoard NIC1:             [Enabled]
    OnBoard NIC2(Gbit):    [Enabled]
  8. Press <Esc> to return to the Advanced menu
  9. Select the >> Boot menu
  10. Select "Removable Device" and press <Enter> to expand list
  11. Confirm "Legacy Floppy Device" is enabled
    (If "!" is present, press <Shift + 1> to enable the boot device
  12. Insert the bootable floppy diskette containing the extracted ATARAID_Comp.EXE files
  13. Press <F10>, and select [Yes] to save configuration changes and exit now?
  14. Press <Ctrl + S> or <F4> when the SiI3112A SATA Raid Controller BIOS appears during POST
  15. Confirm no RAID set exist. If one does exist, you will need to delete the RAID set.
    (Warning: If you have data on your hard drives, it will be lost if you delete RAID set. Please use caution when using this utility. It should only be used before the OS is loaded. Once the OS is loaded, do not switch to SATA modes. This may result in a non-functioning system.)
  16. Exit RAID Configuration Utility by pressing <Ctrl + E> and confirm exit by pressing <Y>
  17. Boot to the floppy diskette
  18. Type "ATARAID.EXE -ATA" and press <Enter>
  19. When program has finished, turn off the computer and remove the floppy diskette
  20. Remove the A/C Power Cord from the system for minimum of 10 seconds
  21. Reconnect and power system.
System is now configured for Standard Serial ATA Mode.

Serial ATA RAID Mode (Either Striped or Mirrored Set):
  1. Prepare a blank formatted floppy diskette
  2. Download ATARAID.EXE file
  3. Run the ATARAID_Comp.EXE (This operation will extract all files onto the floppy diskette, and make the diskette bootable)
  4. Remove all add-in adapters from the system (Includes any add-in PCI cards)
  5. Enter BIOS Setup program by pressing <F2> during POST
  6. Select the >> Advanced >> OnBoard Devices menu
  7. Confirm the following OnBoard Devices are enabled
    OnBoard Serial ATA:     [Enabled]
    OnBoard NIC1:             [Enabled]
    OnBoard NIC2(Gbit):    [Enabled]
  8. Press <Esc> to return to the Advanced menu
  9. Select the >> Boot menu

System is now configured for Serial ATA RAID Mode.

Checking Serial ATA Mode:
  1. Enter BIOS Setup program by pressing F2 during POST
  2. Select the >> Advanced >> OnBoard Serial ATA menu
  3. Confirm the following OnBoard Devices are enabled (OnBoard Serial ATA Mode will provide current mode) Press <Esc> to return to the Advanced menu
  4. Exit BIOS without saving.
ATARAID.EXE Program Options:
    > "ataraid -help or -?"
      Brings up command line help
    > "ataraid -ata"
      Programs server to ATA mode operation only (no RAID)
    > "ataraid -raid"
      Programs server to RAID mode operation
