Symptom(s): Continuous beep code during POST, no video output.
Cause: Itanium® 2 Processor with up to 3MB L3 Cache (B3 stepping), Itanium® 2 Processor with up to 6MB L3 Cache (B1 stepping) and Itanium® 2 Processor with up to 9MB L3 Cache (A1 & A2 stepping) require different BIOS versions. The system will automatically enter the BIOS recovery mode when the BIOS version does not match the installed processor, or if the BIOS versions on the processor board and I/O riser board are mismatched.
Solution:
The system is in automatic BIOS recovery mode. This may occur on a newly-installed system, or if processor, or processor board, or I/O riser board has been swapped. To perform a BIOS recovery, follow these steps:
- Identify your Itanium® 2 Processor core. Different Itanium® 2 Processor cores requires different BIOS versions. Please refer to the Intel® Server Platform SR870BN4 BIOS Compatibility Matrix.
- Once you determine which BIOS version matches you processor, download the BIOS recovery ISO image and burn it into a CD.
- Insert the CD and reset the server. SA81 switch #1 does not need to be toggled.
-
One full beep indicates the recovery image (S870BN4C.REC) is loading from disk to memory.
-
Wait two minutes. Video will not displayed during the upgrade process.
-
Two beeps indicate the BIOS recovery has completed successfully and the system will automatically reboot.
After the BIOS recovery, please remember to update other firmware components (BMC, HSC, SDR, BIOS) using the latest SUP to avoid any dependency issues.
