Intel® Entry Storage System SS4000-E
With Active Directory Authentication Domain Names Must be 15 Characters or Less

Up to and including firmware revision 1.3 Build 524, when using Active Directory authentication with the Intel(R) Entry Storage Server SS4000-E, domain names are required to be 15 characters or less.

The domain name is the part before the first dot in a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN). "Domain names" do not include the domain suffix (.com). With mydomain.com, mydomain is the domain name and mydomain.com is the FQDN.

With the Intel(R) Entry Storage Server SS4000-E, Samba is the mechanism for accessing Common Internet File Shares (CIFS) shares. Samba allows for interoperability between Linux servers and Windows-based clients.

During requests for share access from Windows clients, the Samba server authentication takes the full domain name. In certain Active Directory Domain configurations, this name may exceed 15 characters. In the current implementation, however, the Samba server then limits the domain name to fifteen characters. Thus login requests to access CIFS shares do not work for domain names sixteen characters or longer.

With firmware revision 1.4 Build 709, this issue is resolved by offering the NetBIOS name (i.e. the first 15 characters of domain name) to the Samba server so that it can authenticate the user account successfully.

NOTE: Upgrading from a previous version of the firmware to firmware revision 1.4 Build 709 is a “data destructive” process due to the new structure of the firmware and supporting disk drives greater than 500GB.

For firmware revisions up to and including firmware revision 1.3 Build 524, the only workaround is to use domain names shorter than or equal to 15 characters.
