Intel® Entry Storage System SS4000-E
Cannot Authenticate and Access Shared Folders when Using Active Directory

Symptom(s):
After joining the Active Directory domain successfully, users that have been assigned access rights to Intel® Entry Storage System SS4000-E shared folders, are continuously prompted for their Username/Password combination when trying to connect to an SS4000-E shared folder even though they have logged in and authenticated with the domain.

Cause:
The Active Directory domain name does not match the NetBIOS name for the domain. This can happen if:
a) During Active Directory setup the user selects a NetBIOS name that is different from the domain name
b) The domain name chosen by the user is longer than 15 characters

In these cases, when the SS4000-E joins the Active Directory domain, it sets an attribute (workgroup=”domain-name-attribute”) in the “nas.conf” file to what it detects as the Active Directory domain name.  This attribute should actually be set to the actual NetBIOS name, thus a mismatch with the actual NetBIOS name.

Solution:
For firmware revisions up to and including firmware revision 1.3 Build 524, the only workaround is when setting up Active Directory select a domain name of 15 characters or less and ensure that the NetBIOS name matches the domain name.

With firmware revision 1.4 Build 709, this issue is resolved by offering the NetBIOS name (i.e. the first 15 characters of domain name) to the systems so that it can authenticate the user account successfully.

NOTE: Upgrading from a previous version of the firmware to firmware revision 1.4 Build 709 is a “data destructive” process due to the new structure of the firmware and supporting disk drives greater than 500GB.
