Symptom(s):
When attempting to upgrade from 6.3 SP1 to 6.5 the user may receive the error “6.3.43.2607 or 6.5.00.2634_upgrade: ERROR: There was a problem preserving the system configuration. Error Code 169”.
The upgrade then aborts leaving the storage system at the previous version of storage system software.
Cause:
The root cause of this error is that during the upgrade, the upgrade software is designed to search for a system configuration file in the existing storage system software. The actual information in the configuration file is not important to the storage system software, the upgrade software just needs to know that it is present in the system.
Later upgrade versions do not search for this system configuration file.
Solution:
Update the Storage System Software version 6.5 SP1 and then update to Storage System Software version 6.6 SP1.
Storage System Software version 6.5 SP1 has not been validated for prolonged use and is only to be used as an interim step to reach Storage System Software 6.6, or later. 6.5 SP1 will not be supported beyond this use.
Upgrade Prerequisites:
If you are running a software version earlier than 6.3.x on the SSR212MA, you must first upgrade to 6.3.x. You can then upgrade to Release 6.5 SP1.
If any iSCSI volumes are in use, stop any activity to those volumes and unmount or log off before beginning the upgrade. The storage module reboots as part of the upgrade process. Consequently, your volumes may go offline, depending on your configuration.
Upgrade path is as follows:
1. Update from 6.3.x to 6.5.01. Use this link to download the Storage System Software version 6.5 SP1.
2. Update the RAID Controller firmware to 814G if not done already
3. Update to 6.6.01
6.5.01 is the Storage System Software interim update step of 6.5 SP1.
814G is the Storage System RAID controller firmware that is available from the SSR212MA Software & Downloads location.
6.6.01 is Storage System Software Release 6.6 SP1 which is also available from the SSR212MA Software & Downloads location.
Ensure that you are using version 6.6 or later version of the Storage System Console before upgrading the Storage System Software on the storage modules.
Schedule Time for The Upgrade
Upgrading a storage module from version 6.3.43.xxxx to 6.5.xx may take 30 to 40 minutes depending upon the specific platform and configuration.
Use the Console to install the Storage System Software 6.5.xx.xxxx upgrade.
