Intel® PRO/100 LAN+Modem56 CardBus Adapter
Changing COM Ports in Windows* 95 and Windows* 98

Moving COM5 to COM2 (or substitute with COM3 or COM4 if desired):

Ensure that the Intel® PRO/100 adapter is installed properly where one is able to browse the network, and that the modem is working properly (verify using Hyperterminal).

As with any modifications to the registry, it is recommended that a backup of the registry is made before making changes. Copy registry files (SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT) to a different subdirectory:

  1. Be sure to disable the device that uses COM2 in the machine BIOS.

  2. Be sure that COM2 does not appear in Device Manager under Ports (COM1&LPT1).

  3. Run "REGEDIT."

  4. In the path "My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\PCI\VEN_115D&DEV_0103\014800" 1 select and edit "PortName" to change "COM5" to "COM2," select and delete "ForcedConfig."

  5. In the path "My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\devicemap\serialcomm," be sure to have the string COM2 "COM2," if not add it.

  6. Close REGEDIT and run modem diagnostics in COM2.

1 The ID 014800 may vary. Most likely, there will be only one entry under the "VEN_115D&DEV_0103" and it will reference the PRO/100 LAN+Modem56 CardBus adapter. Make changes as described.

This applies to:
