General Instructions

After installing the adapter in the computer, configure it under Windows NT*.

  1. Double-click the Network icon in the Control Panel.

  2. Select the Adapters tab and click Add.

  3. Select Have Disk. Insert the PRO/100 Server Configuration and Drivers Disk in the floppy drive and click OK.

  4. Select "Intel PRO/100 Server PCI Adapter" from the list of available drivers and click OK.

  5. Assign the network services required (by default, all are selected) by selecting the Service tab.

  6. Assign the network protocols required by selecting the Protocols tab.

  7. Click Close to continue. Depending on the Microsoft* protocols and services that are installed, other configuration screens may appear. Refer to Microsoft documentation and configure as directed.

    NOTE: The NDIS 4.0 miniport driver will be installed in Windows NT 4.0.

  8. When prompted, restart the computer.



Running PROSet To Test The Adapter And Change The Settings

  1. To launch PROSet, double-click on the Network Icon in the Control Panel.

  2. Select the Adapters tab and double-click on the "Intel PRO/100 Server PCI Adapter."

  3. After a brief examination of your system, the Intel PROSet main screen will appear.


Testing the Adapter

  1. From the Intel PROSet main screen, click the Test button.


  2. If the NDIS driver is already loaded, a dialog box will be displayed that says "The active network driver will be used to test your adapter's connection to the network". Click Continue to proceed and the Monitoring Driver Activity dialog box will appear. See the Driver Analysis screen for test results.

  3. If the adapter was added to the Adapter tab of the Network dialog box, but the system was not restarted (the driver hasn't been loaded yet), then a complete diagnostic will be performed. See the Results box for the test outcome.


Changing the Settings

From the main Intel PROSet menu, click the Change button to get to the Adapter Settings screen. The defaults work correctly for most configurations.

Network Speed

Recommended setting: Auto (default)

This parameter sets the speed the PRO/100 Server adapter will use on the Ethernet wire.

Auto: The adapter detects if its environment can support 100Mbps speed. It then sets the speed to 100 if it can, or 10 if it can't.

10Mbps: Sets the adapter to 10Mbps operation only.

100Mbps: Sets the adapter to 100Mbps operation only.

Duplex Mode

Recommended setting: Auto

Auto: The adapter negotiates with the hub how to send/receive packets, either full- or half-duplex.

Full-duplex: The adapter sends and receives packets at the same time. This improves the performance of your adapter. Set duplex mode to full-duplex only if you have a full-duplex capable switch and it is configured for full-duplex.

Half-duplex: The adapter performs one operation at a time. It either sends or receives. Most hubs are half-duplex.

Connector

Recommended Setting: Auto

Auto: The adapter automatically detects whether the TPE or MII port is being used and configures itself accordingly.

TPE: The TPE connector is the active port.

MII: The MII connector is the active port.

NOTE: If the MII connector is being used, set the Speed and Duplex mode of the adapter.

Advanced Adapter Settings

Click the Advanced button in the Adapter Settings screen to change the Advanced setting.

NOTE: The defaults work correctly for most configurations. Please use caution when changing these parameters. Use the on-line help for additional information.

Coalesce Buffers

Recommended setting: 8

Receive Buffers

Recommended setting: 32

Transmit Control Blocks

Recommended setting: 16

Adaptive Transmit Threshold

Recommended setting: On

This parameter dynamically optimizes the point at which early transmit cycles will be executed. This results in higher performance but may generate an occasional under run. To eliminate under runs, set it to Off.

Adaptive Technology

Recommended setting: On

Adaptive Technology customizes the EtherExpress PRO/100 Server adapter to the respective operating system by downloading microcode to the silicon. This improves performance and minimizes CPU utilization.
