Microsoft Windows* 95, Windows* 98, Windows* Me, Windows* 2000 and Windows* XP will not automatically detect PRO/10 and PRO/10+ ISA adapters on startup if Plug and Play is not enabled on the adapter. However, they should be found by the Control Panel Add/Remove hardware function (except for Windows XP*, which only supports the adapter in Plug and Play mode). Drivers for the EtherExpress™ PRO/10 and EtherExpress™ PRO/10+ ISA adapters are included with all of these operating systems.
Early versions of the PRO/10 ISA adapter did not support Plug and Play and will not be automatically detected, and will not work in Windows XP*. These early versions had the following product codes and PWA numbers.

TPE | | Later model PRO/10 (product codes ending in an A) and PRO/10+ ISA (product codes ending in a B) do support Plug and Play. These versions should be automatically detected if Plug and Play is enabled. See the Network Adapter & Driver Identification Guide for assistance in identifying your adapter.
To see if Plug and Play is enabled on your adapter?
- Boot the computer to DOS--not a DOS window. (See Executing a Clean Boot to DOS below for instructions.)

- Then run the PRO/10 ISA test and configuration program SOFTSET2.EXE. If your computer has a Plug and Play BIOS, this program will display the message "Plug and Play detected. Grayed menu items are unavailable." This means that a Plug and Play environment has been detected, not that the adapter has Plug and Play enabled.

Note: If you do not have a copy of this program, download the latest version of the driver software in the archive E10DISK.EXE and extract it to your hard drive.
Once in SOFTSET2:
- Highlight "Change Adapter Configuration" and press "Enter."

- Then highlight "Advanced Options Menu" and press "Enter."

Plug and Play will be displayed (unless this is one of the early versions listed above) and will show enabled or disabled.
To change it:
- Highlight "Plug and Play" and press "Enter."

- Then select your choice and press "Enter."

- Press "Esc" to exit this menu, and then press "F10" to save your settings.

- Be sure to test the adapter before exiting the program by selecting "Test adapter," and then "Test adapter" again in the next menu.

If the adapter does not work in Plug and Play mode in Windows versions other than Windows XP*, you can turn off Plug and Play and either manually configure the adapter, or instruct Windows to search for new hardware. Be sure to find an available interrupt and I/O address, and then set the adapter to those values in SOFTSET2 before configuring it in Windows. If manually configuring with Plug and Play off, be sure to select the driver named "Intel EtherExpress™ PRO/10+", not "Intel EtherExpress™ PRO/10+ (PnP Enabled)."
Note: Windows* should always automatically detect PRO/10+ PCI adapters.
Executing a Clean Boot to DOS
MS-DOS and PC-DOS If you are running DOS version 5.0 or lower:
- Rename the files CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT in the root directory of your boot disk.

- Then reboot the computer.

If you are running DOS versions 6.0 or higher:
- Boot the computer and, as soon as the words "Starting MS-DOS..." appear on the screen, press the F5 key.
Windows* 95
- Boot the computer and, as soon as the words "Starting Windows 95..." appear on the screen, press the keys Shift and F5 simultaneously.
Windows* 98 Format a diskette and make it bootable. To do this:
- Start a DOS session.

- Put a blank diskette in the A: drive.

- Within the DOS session, enter FORMAT A: /S.

When the diskette is formatted, reboot the computer from the diskette.
If the computer boots from the hard drive even with the diskette inserted, you may have to change the computers BIOS settings to boot from the diskette. To do this:
- Enter the BIOS setup and look for settings related to booting or boot sequence.

- Change the boot device order so that "floppy drive" or "removable devices" is listed before the hard drive.

All Other Operating Systems Find or create a DOS bootable diskette with no CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT file in the root directory and boot the computer from that diskette.
