Compatibility
You can add flash memory to any flash-upgradeable Intel® EtherExpress adapter. These adapters include the following:
- EtherExpress 16 adapter
- EtherExpress PRO/10 ISA adapter
- EtherExpress PRO/10+ ISA adapter
1. Install FlashWorks 1.62c (optional)
- If you plan to use FlashWorks, install it on a network server. For installation instructions and detailed information about FlashWorks features, see the FlashWorks Installation and User's Guide.
- If you plan to use the flash chip as a Novell boot ROM, you do not need to install FlashWorks.
2. Install the flash chip
- Turn off the computer.
WARNING: Failure to turn off the power could electrocute you and may damage the board or the computer.
- If the adapter is in the computer, remove it.
- Place the flash chip in the empty socket on the board.
- Point the chip and socket notches in the same direction.
- Align the flash chip's pins with the socket's holes.
- Push the chip into the socket, taking care not to bend the pins, until the bottom of the chip touches the socket.
Some adapters have 32-pin flash chip sockets, while others have 34-pin sockets. If your flash socket has 34 pins, leave the pair of socket holes closest to the notch empty.
3. Load the flash image
EtherExpress PRO/10 and PRO/10+ ISA adapters
- Place the adapter in one of the computer's ISA slots, then turn on the computer.
- Put the Flash Programming Diskette into a drive, switch to that drive, and type:
- ISS2 /RESTOREEPROM xF [enter]
Where x is the number of connectors on the adapter (1, 2, or 3).
This command resets the adapter to its factory default settings.
If a message appears and tells you SoftSet2 found a network adapter it can't support, re-enter the above command.
- Restart the computer.
- With the Flash Programming Diskette in a drive, switch to that drive, then type:
- SOFTSET2 [enter]
- From SoftSet2's Main Menu, choose View adapter configuration.
- From the View adapter configuration menu, make sure a flash chip address is enabled.
If an address isn't enabled, exit the View adapter configuration menu, and from the Main menu, choose Change adapter configuration, then select a flash chip address.
- If necessary, save the new setting, then exit SoftSet2.
- With the Flash Programming Diskette in a drive, switch to that drive, then type:
- FLRESTOR /ERASE [enter]
- After the flash image is loaded on the flash chip, restart the computer.
EtherExpress 16 adapters
- Place the adapter in one of the computer's ISA slots, then turn on the computer.
- Insert the Flash Programming diskette into a drive, switch to that drive, and type:
- SOFTSET2 [enter]
- From SoftSet2's main menu, choose View current configuration and make sure the adapter has a flash/boot ROM address.
If the flash/boot ROM address is disabled, exit the View current configuration menu, and from the Main menu, choose Manual setup, and choose a flash/boot ROM address.
- Save the new setting to the adapter, then exit SoftSet2.
- Put the Flash Programming Diskette into a drive, switch to that drive, and type:
- FLRESTOR /ERASE [enter]
- After the flash image is loaded on the flash chip, restart the computer.
4. Install and configure the adapter
After you restart the computer, the FlashStart menu appears.
EtherExpress PRO/10 and PRO/10+ ISA adapters
- Choose Run FlashStart if you're on a NetWare* network and want to download adapter settings and drivers from the FlashWorks server. This option requires a network server with FlashWorks installed (see step 1).
- Choose Run FlashSet if you want to configure the adapter using the program on the flash chip and don't need help installing drivers.
- Choose Exit if you want to use SoftSet2 to configure the adapter, run diagnostics, and install drivers.
EtherExpress 16 adapters
- Choose Disable FlashStart Permanently if you've already installed and configured the adapter. (FlashStart is used to configure the board, so you won't need it.)
- Choose FlashStart for NetWare if you're installing and configuring the adapter for the first time, running NetWare 3.11 or later, and want to download adapter settings and drivers from the FlashWorks server. This option requires a network server with FlashWorks installed (see step 1).
- If you're installing the adapter in a diskless workstation, see the Installation Guide that came with the adapter for more information.
Troubleshooting tips
- If SoftSet2 shows no available flash memory addresses, disable EMM386 in CONFIG.SYS.
- If you're using an EtherExpress PRO/10+ ISA adapter, and SoftSet2 displays a message saying it found a new Intel network adapter that it can't support after you enter the ISS2 /RESTOREEPROM xF command, re-enter the command.
This command resets the adapter to factory defaults.
- If you enter the FLRESTOR /ERASE command and see an error message telling you FLRESTOR can't find the flash image file, make sure you have switched to the floppy drive that contains the Flash Programming Diskette.
