Note: References below to Xircom® CardBus Modem 56 refer to both the Xircom® WinSwift 56K CardBus Modem - (CBM56W) and the Xircom® WinGlobal 56K CardBus Modem - (CBM56WG) unless otherwise specified.
First, make sure you have the latest drivers for the CBM56W or CBM56WG. To download the latest drivers, go to the software and drivers page. Next, follow the steps below:
- With the computer powered off, connect the cables and insert the Xircom CardBus Modem 56 into the CardBus PC Card slot as shown in the Installation Guide. Once the Modem is inserted, start your computer.
- Once Windows NT* 4.0 has loaded, insert the Xircom CD into the CD-ROM drive. If you have downloaded the drivers, locate them on the hard drive. Click Start, Run, and type the path to SETUP.EXE (for example, E:\SETUP.EXE). Click the menu item Install Xircom Software and Tools.
- On the Setup for Xircom CardBus Modem 56 screen, click Next.
- In the Destination Directory box, click Next.
- In the File Copy box, click Finish. The Xircom Setup Wizard will copy installation files and utilities to the directory specified.
- When the file copy is complete, click OK. The Modem Configuration for NT dialog box will display default resources. Accept the default values and click OK.
- If prompted to restart the computer, click No. Go to Control Panel and double-click Devices. Highlight PCMCIA and click Stop to disable it. Click Close. Restart the computer.
- After Windows reloads, double-click Modems in the Control Panel. Click Add.
- On the Install New Modem screen, be sure the field "Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list" is checked, then click Next.
- On the following screen, click Have disk. On the next screen, type the path to the NT4 folder on the Xircom CD (for example, E:\NT4) and click OK.
- Verify that the Xircom CardBus Modem 56 is selected, then select the COM port with the highest number, such as COM 5, and click Next.
- On the Install New Modem screen click Finish. Restart the computer.
- Run Windows NT Diagnostics (Click Start, Run, type in WINMSD, and click OK) and select the Resources tab. Make sure IRQ 11 for Serial shows as PCI. If so, the modem will work. After this you can reenable the PCMCIA services (see step 7 above, but click Start this time) and reboot if necessary. IRQ 11 will stay as a PCI Irq. If the Serial device in Windows NT Diagnostics shows IRQ 11 as ISA, the modem may not function. See the Note below to resolve this.
Note: If the PCMCIA services are disabled (Step #7) prior to running SETUP.EXE for Xircom modem, IRQ 11 will still show up as ISA in Windows NT Diagnostics. In this case, you have to reenable the PCMCIA services in ControlPanel/Devices and reboot the machine. This will change your IRQ 11 from ISA to PCI and the modem will work.
- Next, you can set up your communications software to make a modem call. If you are calling from a location that requires country-specific modem settings, run the Xircom® CountrySelect Utility by selecting Start, Programs, Xircom Utilities, CountrySelect. Choose the country from which your will make modem calls, then click Save and Exit.
