About This New Software
This new software provides the following:
- Improved sync times especially through the PC Card slot
- Additional simplified/automatic configuration of the Intellisync* for REX software (current REX 6000 software must be uninstalled first)
- Additional Windows* Me support
Some manual configuration is required.
Note: This software replaces the REX 6000 software that resides on the PC; however does not change to the software/firmware on the REX 6000 device itself. No updating of the software/firmware on the REX 6000 device is required - everyone should have the same firmware version, 1.1.2.7. Use the following steps to confirm this:
- Press the Home (house) key.
- Select Main, Controls, and then About.
Operating System Support:
The REX 6000 now supports Windows* 98, Windows* Me, and Windows* 2000. All three operating systems support synchronization via the PC Card slot, serial cradle, and USB cradle. Other operating systems are not supported.
Personal Information Manager (PIM) Support:
The REX 6000 currently supports synchronization with the following Personal Information Managers (PIM): Microsoft Outlook* 97, Outlook* 98, Outlook* 2000 (not included with the REX 6000), and Intellisync* Mobile Desktop (included with the REX6000). Other PIMs are not supported.
Determine if Driver Version 1.01 is Currently Running
Follow these steps to determine the version of REX 6000 software currently running:
- Insert the REX 6000 into the PC card slot or cradle.
- On your Desktop, click Start, select Programs, REX 6000, and then click Intellisync for REX.
- Click Help, and then click About to see the version.
Note: If the version reported is less than 1.0.0.22, you are not running the latest version and you need to upgrade. If the version reported is 1.0.0.22, you already have the latest driver set (version 1.01). If you already have version driver set, but did not follow the detailed installation instructions in this document, you may want to uninstall and reinstall version 1.01 again following these instructions.
Uninstall the Previous REX 6000 Driver Set (version 1.00)
If you are currently running the REX 6000 driver set version 1.00, then you must first uninstall that software before you install the new version:
- Perform a "sync" between your REX and your PIM to update your latest changes.
- Remove your REX from the PC Card slot, USB Docking Station, or Serial Docking Station.
- If you are using the USB Docking Station, UNPLUG THE CABLE! This is a critical to ensuring a clean install!
Important! If you are using Intellisync* Mobile Desktop* (IMD), you will need to back up your data files to an alternate directory. (See Steps 4-6 for details.) If Intellisync for REX, REXTools, or Intellisync Mobile Desktop is running, make sure you exit the program(s) before proceeding with Step 4.
- From the Windows Desktop, right-click Start and select Windows Explorer.
- In the Address window, browse to the C:\Program Files\REX6000\PIM\Data folder.
- Back up any files or folders found in this directory.
Important! You are only backing up the DATA folder along with the sub-folder(s) found within the DATA folder (e.g.: C:\ProgramFiles\REX6000\PIM\Data\Default). This is a very critical step in preserving your Intellisync Mobile Desktop database(s).
- From the Windows Desktop, double-click My Computer, select Control Panel, and then Add/Remove Programs. You will see this listing:
- Xircom REX 6000 Drivers and Online Documents
- Xircom REX 6000 Tools
- Xircom REX 6000, Intellisync for REX
- Xircom REX 6000, PIM for REX
Important! If you are using the USB Docking Station, you will also see this listing:
Xircom USB to Serial REX Cradle -- Remove this first!
You may also see this entry on some systems:
Xircom USB to Serial Converter -- Remove this second!
- Remove the Xircom USB to Serial REX Cradle.
- As soon as you click Remove, a confirmation dialog box will appear showing:
- Xircom USB to Serial REX Cradle driver installation files
- Xircom USB to Serial REX Cradle configuration data
Make sure BOTH ARE SELECTED, then select OK, or Uninstall.
Note: Sometimes the Add/Remove Programs application will close in between removing programs. If this occurs, simply double-click Add/Remove Programs again.
- Remove the Xircom USB to Serial Converter in the same manner, if listed.
- Click on each of the other Xircom REX 6000 items listed and remove those as well.
- When prompted, click Finish (or Done), and then click OK.
- When all Xircom REX 6000 entries have been removed, click OK again to close the Add/Remove Programs window.
Important! Choose No when asked to restart your system. This is a critical to ensuring a clean install!
- From the Windows Desktop, right-click Start, select Windows Explorer, and delete the C:\Program Files\REX6000 folder.
Important! This is a critical to ensuring a clean install!
- Shutdown and reboot the system.
Install the New REX 6000 Driver Set (version 1.01)

- Intellisync Mobile Desktop (default) - Choose this option if you do not have a PIM and you want to install the Intellisync PIM provided with REX.
- Microsoft Outlook - Choose this option if you have Outlook and you want to use it as your PIM. REX does not support Outlook Express. Outlook must already be installed in order for the Setup Wizard to successfully complete.

- After you've selected your PIM, click Copy Files.
- You will see the message REX 6000 Setup Complete. Click Finish, and then Exit. This will close the REX 6000 installer.

Note: After you have double-clicked the application, you can close Windows Explorer.
- If you are using the Serial Docking Station, install the batteries in the docking station, plug the docking station into an available serial port of your computer, and proceed to Step 16 OR select on of the following options:
- Restart (reboot) your computer! Let Windows boot up completely.
- Carefully insert the REX 6000 into the Serial Docking Station, USB Docking Station, or PC Card slot face up.

- Click OK. This will allow REX Tools to run without querying the REX for data.
- This step will initialize your REX 6000, which will erase the data. Back up your sensitive data before proceeding.
Select Initialization from the Tools menu. You will be prompted to "Initialize REX 6000." Select OK.
- REX will display Synchronizing (only viewable in the cradle). When initialization is complete REX will display Ready (only viewable in the cradle). If you can't view the cradle, the Connecting Packets screen will stop when initialization has completed.

- Exit REX Tools.
- From the Windows Desktop, click Start, Programs, REX 6000, and select Online Documentation.
