Retried Locked Cycles in a Pentium® Pro Processor Based System

This document explains the transaction ordering when a locked cycle is retried on the Pentium® Pro processor bus.

When the Pentium Pro processor initiates a locked cycle which is retried (DEFER# is asserted in the snoop phase), will the next transaction issued by the processor be the retried locked cycle?

There is no requirement that the next bus transaction be the locked cycle. If there are other pending core requests requiring external bus service, they may be issued onto the bus before the lock is retried.
