Purpose
The Intel® Centrino® Processor Technology Test Utility is a free software utility developed by Intel for testing systems for the proper functioning of Intel® Centrino® processor technology.
The utility tests an Intel Centrino processor technology-enabled system to determine if the required components are functioning correctly. This determination is made by testing each of three core Intel Centrino processor technology components (processor, chipset and wireless adapter) for proper functionality.
While it is expected that test failures will be very rare, the utility provides a means to confirm that Intel Centrino processor technology is fully functional on enabled laptop systems as set up and running in the customers' environments.
In coordination with vendors and manufacturers, this utility is being made available to ensure that customers enjoy the highest quality experience with Intel Centrino processor technology.
Features
The utility has six basic capabilities.
- Test compatible systems for core component functionality
- Determine Intel Centrino processor technology functionality based on core components status
- Display a summary of test results
- Generate a results report if any components fail
- Provide guidance for resolving failures (website)
- Provide a source for utility updates (website)
1. Test compatible systems for core component functionality
The utility tests the target system for the presence and functionality of the core components required by Centrino processor technology. The core components are the processor, chipset and wireless adapter.
For each of the three components, the utility will test that a compatible component is present and functioning properly. If the compatible component is not found on the system, or if a compatible component is found but it is not functional, the test for that component will fail.
Generally, all of the tests will be complete in less than 10 seconds.
2. Determine if Intel Centrino processor technology is fully functional
Based on the results from the tests of the core components, the utility will determine whether or not Intel Centrino processor technology is fully functional on the target system. Only when all three of the core component tests return successful results will the utility determine that Intel Centrino processor technology is fully functional on the target system.
If any of the tests of the three core components fail, the utility will determine that Intel Centrino processor technology is not fully functional.
3. Display a summary of the test results
As the tests are complete for each of the three components, the utility will display the results of those tests on the "Results" screen.
When all of the tests are complete, the Utility will indicate whether or not is has determined that Centrino processor technology is fully functional on the "Results" screen.
4. Generate a results report if any components fail
In the case of any failures of the core components tests, the utility will create a "Results report." Please note: The results report is only created when at least one core component test fails.
Clicking the "Display Results" button provided on the results screen will open the report as a text file for you to view. At the same time, the file will be automatically saved to your computer's desktop.
Each report contains a summary of the results as well as information about the version of the utility and when the test was run. It also contains a "validation key" to certify the results on the report.
You can use the report to communicate the test results to your vendor.
5. Provide guidance for resolving test failures
In the case of any failures of the core components tests, customers are advised to contact their vendor or manufacturer for more detailed testing, diagnosis and resolution.
Also, in the case of any failures of the core components tests, the utility will provide a "Learn More" button on the results screen Please note: The "Learn More" button is only provided when at least one core component test is failed.
Clicking the "Learn More" button provided on the results screen will open a website dedicated to helping customers understand and take steps to resolve issues that might arise with Intel Centrino processor technology.
6. Provide a source for utility updates Because new systems are introduced so continually, the utility itself must be updated frequently.
The utility provides a link to the utility website where the latest version can be found. Click on the "Updates" button on the utility to display the "Updates" screen. Then click the "Check for Updates" button to open the website where you can find the latest version of the utility.
Limitations
The utility can only report that the technology is functional or not functional, based on the results from testing the core components.
The utility can not identify the system's components. The utility can only determine the functionality of core components. It can not identify them, nor can it identify any other components in the system.
The utility can not diagnose the cause of a test failure. It can only identify which core component has failed the test. The utility can not determine why it failed the test.
The utility can not correct a system which has failed the technology test.
Please contact your system vendor for assistance in diagnosing and resolving a test failure.
Getting Started
