Tape Driver Functionality and Performance Test Utilities

The Central Console v1.60 CD for the StorageExpress™ system includes a new set of utilities to test tape drive functionality and performance. The diagnostics programs for tape drives supported by the StorageExpress system are: HP DDS1, HP DDS2 and DDS2Autochanger*, Exabyte 8mm, and Quantum DLT* drives. These tests can be performed on both the StorageExpress I and StorageExpress II systems.

You will need to connect a monitor and a keyboard to the StorageExpress™ system to perform these tests. If you are not familiar with removing the back panel from the StorageExpress I system to access the monitor and keyboard ports, please contact Intel Customer Support at 916-377-7000.

To prepare for the installation, locate the /tapediag directory on the v1.60 CD. You will find a subdirectory labeled for each tape drive manufacturer. Copy the files from the subdirectory that corresponds to your tape drive onto a file server that the StorageExpress system can communicate with. You will be downloading these files onto the StorageExpress system later.

Note: If you are running Central Console v1.60sp1 and are testing the HP DDS1, HP DDS2 and/or DDS2Autochanger*, you may proceed directly to the next section without copying any files. Perform steps one through four, type 'cd \util' and then proceed directly to appropriate section below.

Once the appropriate files have been copied, go to the StorageExpress system. The rest of the necessary steps will take place at the StorageExpress system. After completing steps 1 through 7 below, perform the steps listed in the section corresponding to your tape drive type and model.

Using the keyboard and monitor attached to the StorageExpress™ system, perform the following steps:

  1. Unload ARCserve* and NetWare* by typing the following at the NetWare™ System Console screen:
    • Version 1.60 - Type 'epdown' and press [Enter].
    • Version 2.0 - Type 'astop6' and press [Enter]. After ACRserve has finished unloading, type 'down' and press[Enter]. Then type 'exit' and press [Enter].
  2. When the monitor displays a DOS prompt, type 'setboot auto 1' and press [Enter]. The StorageExpress system will reboot and a Maintenance Mode Menu will display on the LCD Panel.
  3. Using the buttons and LCD on the front panel of the StorageExpress system, scroll down and highlight and select 'Tape and Disk Operations'.
  4. In the tape and disk operations submenu, highlight and select 'Boot to Tape Manufacturers Diagnostics'. The StorageExpress system will reboot and a DOS prompt will eventually appear on the attached monitor.
  5. At the DOS* prompt, type 'lanload' and press [Enter].
  6. Type 'netx' and press [Enter].
  7. Change your current drive to F: and login to the NetWare file server containing the appropriate file.

To start the diagnostics program, refer to the section that corresponds to your drive type:

  • For HP DDS1, DDS2, and DDS2 Autochanger DAT drives, go to the HP* section.
  • For Exabyte tape drives, go to the Exabyte section.
  • For Quantum DLT4000 tape drives, go to the Quantum section.

HP DDS1, DDS2, and DDS2 Autochanger DAT drives

Note: If you are testing a standard DDS1 or DDS2 DAT tape drive, you will need a NEW blank tape for the tests. If there are multiple drives on the StorageExpress system, the same tape can be used for each tape drive. If you are testing an Autochanger tape drive, you will need a fully populated magazine with a NEW blank tape in slot #4. There should be no cleaning tapes in the magazine.

    1. At the DOS prompt in the directory on the server containing the test file, type 'dattest -e' and press [Enter].
    2. 'Do you want to test the device on HBA 0, SCSI id 1?' will appear on the monitor. Press 'Y' and [Enter] for the SCSI ID that corresponds to the tape drive[s] in question. If you have more than one tape drive installed, the question will be repeated for each tape drive until a Y response is given. The test can be run on only one tape drive at a time.
    3. 'Please enter the serial number of the drive on HBA 0, SCSI 1, it must be at least 5 characters.' will appear on the monitor. Enter any five digits in this field except all zeros. You do not have to use an actual serial number.
    4. You are then prompted to put in a blank tape.
      1. AUTOCHANGER - Insert the fully populated magazine into the Autochanger. There are 2 buttons in a column on the front of the Autochanger. The upper button is the 'Select' button; the lower button is the 'Load' button. Repeatedly press the 'Select' button until you see a 4 in the small LCD panel on the front of the tape drive. Then press the 'Load' button and the selected tape will be pulled into the drive.
      2. DDS1 & DDS2 - Insert a NEW blank tape into the drive.
    5. The test will perform a series of reads and writes on the tape. Results are displayed as read[pos./neg.] and write[pos./neg.] percentages. Record all four percentage numbers and contact Intel Customer Support with the results.
    6. Eject the tape or magazine when prompted by the program. If you have multiple tape drives installed, you can continue using the same tape to test the other drives. Simply repeat the above steps starting with step 9.
    7. When you are finished testing, logout of the server and press [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Del] to reboot the StorageExpress system into Maintenance mode.
    8. Once in Maintenance Mode, use the buttons and the LCD on the front panel of the StorageExpress system to scroll down, highlight and select 'Configure Boot Options'.
    9. Highlight and select 'Set to NetWare Mode'. Then highlight and select <OK>. The StorageExpress system will reboot into NetWare Mode.

    Exabyte 8500c and 8505XL drives

Note: You will need a NEW 8mm blank tape for the tests. If there are multiple drives on the StorageExpress system, the same tape can be used for each tape drive.

    1. At the DOS* prompt in the directory on the server containing the test file, type 'expert' and press [Enter].
    2. Read the warning on the opening screen; type any key to continue. Insert a new blank tape.
    3. Use the down-arrow key to select the SCSI ID and device that corresponds to the tape drive[s] to be tested and press the [Enter] key. The test can be run on only one tape drive at a time.
    4. Use the right arrow key to highlight '-W/Rd' and press [Enter] for full write/read test. The results will appear in the Operation column to the right of the drive being tested and indicate whether the drive passed or failed the test. If the test fails, please contact Intel Customer Support for repair or replacement of the tape drive.
    5. If you have multiple tape drives installed, you can continue using the same tape to test the other drives. Simply repeat the steps starting with step 10 above.
    6. When you are finished testing, press [Esc] and use the right-arrow key to select 'Exit' and press [Enter].

    Quantum DLT 4000

    1. At the DOS* prompt, in the directory on the server containing the test file, type 'dlt' and press [Enter].
    2. Once DLT.EXE has loaded, press the [Esc] key to continue.
    3. Select the proper drive. Press [Alt]+'S', then press 'E' to select 'Select/Show'.
    4. A Device Selection screen will appear. Press [Tab] and use your keyboard's arrow keys to select the proper device (DLT4000), then press [Enter].
    5. Disable write protection. Press [Alt]+'S', then press 'P' to select 'Protection'. A 'Set Global Protection' screen will appear. Press [Tab], press the space bar, and then press [Enter].
    6. Send Diagnostics. Make sure there is a blank, known good tape loaded properly in the drive. The 'Tape in Use' light should be on. THIS TEST WILL DESTROY ANY DATA ON THE TAPE! If everything seems to be in order, press [ALT]+'5' to Send Diagnostics, and then press [Enter]. This test may take up to 15 minutes, depending on your tape.
    7. Receive Diagnostic. When the test is finished, press [Alt]+'6' to receive diagnostics. This retrieves results information for the test that just completed. Record the information and repeat the above steps for each DLT drive to be tested on this system.
    8. When you are finished testing, press [Alt]+'X' to exit the program and then logout of the server.
