Symptom The StorageExpress I System beeps at startup or the StorageExpress II system (with screen attached) does not show the correct amount of memory installed.
Description Memory installed does not conform to platform requirements or is damaged.
Solution Install only known good 72-Pin SIMMS (tested; preferably those with tin solder contacts- Gold has inherent problems) in the following configuration:
StorageExpress I System: This platform beeps a sequence when NON parity SIMMs are used and fail to boot.
Motherboard Banks SIMM Speed SIMM Density |
- Panther - 2 (2 sockets per bank) - 80ns or faster WITH PARITY - 4,8,16 Mbit. |
Each Bank MUST have 2 PARITY SIMMs of the SAME density and speed, offering the following configurations (up to 32 Mb specified higher is a waste):
2x4 = 8Mb (EL ship) 2x8 = 16Mb (XL ship) |
4x4 = 16Mb (EL upgrade) 4x8 = 32Mb |
StorageExpress II System: This platform has three motherboards, the 486 based Ninja (ELD) and the Pentium(R) processor based Plato (XLD). Some StorageExpress II+ units use the Tahiti motherboard which is analogous to the Plato as far as memory requirements are concerned.
Motherboard Banks SIMM Speed SIMM Density |
- Ninja - 2 (1 socket per bank) - 80ns or faster - 4,8,16,32 (only 16 Mbit SIMMs are used for our configurations) |
The Atlas memory chipset will allow the use of parity and non-parity SIMMS. The parity is detected automatically and enabled for the particular bank.
| 1x16 = 16Mb (ELD ship) |
2x16 = 32Mb (ELD Upgrade) |
Motherboard Banks SIMM Speed SIMM Density |
- Plato - 2 (2 sockets per bank) - 70ns or faster - 4,8,16 Mbit. |
Each Bank MUST have 2 SIMMs of the SAME density and speed. Parity is NOT supported thus ANY SIMM (with or without) will work offering the following configurations (up to 32 Mb specified):
4x4 = 16Mb 4x8 = 32Mb 2x16 = 32Mb (ARCsvr 6.0, Version 2.0) |
2x8 = 16Mb (XLD ship)
4x16 = 64Mb (Mega system) |
