StorageExpress™ Systems
1.60 A.E. Service Pack 1 Hangs

Symptom
When Service Pack 1 is applied to Central Console 1.60 A.E., the machine goes into the reboot mode to update the firmware, and the StorageExpress™ system appears to hang. If a monitor is attached to the StorageExpress system, it displays the DOS prompt.

Description
The StorageExpress™ system has a small DOS partition. Excess files from previous updates, or user files copied to this partition, prevent the update from completing successfully.

Solution
The excess files from the user or previous updates need to be removed prior to the update. The attempted update copies AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS to AUTOEXEC.ORG and CONFIG.ORG.

To recover the system, hook up a monitor and keyboard and copy the AUTOEXEC.ORG and CONFIG.ORG to AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files via the DOS prompt. Reboot the StorageExpress system after copying the files.

To update Service Pack 1, follow these steps:

  1. Create a self backup after the system reboots.

  2. Reimage the system using the original Intel image tape.
Note: Using a Disk Recovery tape or image tape you created may reintroduce the problem. Use the original Intel Disk Recovery tape that shipped with the system.

  3. Connect to 1.60 Central Console with the Service Pack 1 installed.

  4. Run the self restore, selecting the partial restore only: FTS, Jobs (do not restore the Control files, as that will reintroduce the problem).

  5. The system will reboot and complete the Service Pack update.
