Backing Up Your StorageExpress system
There are two ways to back up the StorageExpress system:
- Running a Self-Backup job
- Creating an Disk Recovery Tape (Image Tape).
We recommend you schedule a Self-Backup job after every full backup, or at least once a week. The Self-Backup job copies all of the File Tracker, Job Schedule, and configuration files to tape.
An Image Tape protects against a hard disk crash by creating a bit-by-bit image copy of the StorageExpress hard disk. The image copy will contain all the Disk Recovery Tape data that shipped with the StorageExpress system plus the information of a regular Self-Backup tape.
Scheduling a Self-Backup
- Run Central Console. From the Main Menu, choose Backup.
- From the Backup Menu, choose Self-Backup.
- In the Options and Schedule for Self-Backup screen, do the following:
- Highlight the desired StorageExpress system on the upper left of the screen.
- Assign a tape name.
- Select the tape drive which contains a blank tape.
- Select the appropriate Start Date and Start Time. If you want this job to run immediately, click on the Immediate box. If you stop here without selecting any Repeat Options (Step E), this job will only run once at the time you've indicated.
- Select Repeat Options. In the Repeat Options for Self-Backup screen, choose one of the listed repeating options.
- When finished, select OK.
You can confirm that this Self-Backup is scheduled by viewing the Job Schedule screen.

Restoring the StorageExpress system
Restoring your StorageExpress system is as easy as backing it up. All you need is the tape you want to restore from. If your StorageExpress system is up and running, use a Self-Restore to restore your system back to a previous configuration. If your StorageExpress system crashes and you are unable to bring it to a bootable state, you will need to restore from an Image Tape.
Scheduling A Self-Restore
- Run Central Console. From the Main Menu, choose Restore.
- From the Restore Menu, choose Self-Restore.
- In the StorageExpress Self-Restore window, do the following:
- Scroll to select the StorageExpress system you want to restore to.
- Select the Tape Drive which contains the tape you want to restore from.
- Type the Tape Name you want to restore from.
- Choose Continue. When you get the prompt to insert the tape to restore from, insert the tape in drive 1. Then choose OK.
If there is a job currently running, the StorageExpress system will first finish the job, suspend all other scheduled jobs and run the Self-Restore. If there are no jobs running, the StorageExpress system will run the Self-Restore immediately.
Restoring From An Image Tape
