Set up a WiFi connection to the Internet without security on Windows Vista*

Use the following steps to set up an unsecure WiFi connection to the Internet.
Notes Connecting to any type of computer network, WiFi in this case, without implementing security is not a recommended practice. This document is provided for basic configuration purposes only

You may have to contact your access point (AP), router manufacturer or Internet Service Provider (ISP) if an Internet connection is not automatically made by the operating system. These steps assume that your network adapter; AP or router; and cable, DSL or other type of modem have already been physically connected and configured.

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Network.
  3. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  4. Click Connect to the Internet.
  5. Click Set up a connection or network.
  6. Click Connect to the Internet.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Click Wireless.
  9. Choose your preconfigured wireless network (this example uses a network named wireless-n) and click Connect. You may also set up a new wireless connection.

  10. Click Next.
  11. Allow the operating system to test your Internet connection. If all hardware and cables are connected propertly, you should receive a message indicating Internet connectivity. Click Browse the Internet now to open a Web browser window.

Note If you cannot connect to the network, we recommend that you run the Microsoft* diagnostic tests. To run these tests, click Diagnose the problem. You can also contact your access device manufacturer and/or ISP for additional assistance.
